International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and to recognize the ongoing struggles they face in the workplace. In Jordan's garment sector, women workers, both Jordanian and migrant, have made significant advancements in recent years, thanks in part to the collaborations between Better Work Jordan and the General Trade Union of Workers in Textile, Garment, and Clothing Industries.
Through initiatives such as the Worker's Voice project, women workers in the garment sector have been given a platform to voice their concerns and participate in decision-making processes. The project has helped to improve communication between workers and management, enhance workers' knowledge of their rights, and increase their participation in decision-making processes. This collaboration has been instrumental in promoting gender equality and empowering women workers in the garment sector.
The General Trade Union of Workers in Textile, Garment, and Clothing Industries has been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of women workers in the garment sector. The union established Workers’ Committees to address the issues faced by workers and women in the industry and to advocate for their rights. The committee has organized training programs for women workers on their legal rights and has worked to increase women's participation in decision-making positions. Additionally, the establishment of workers' management committees inside the factories has been critical in promoting worker participation in decision-making and empowering women workers.
In 2022, a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was signed between the General Trade Union and the garment factories, which specifically addresses the issues faced by women workers in the sector. The CBA empowers women workers and includes provisions on equal pay, paid maternity leave, and protection against harassment and discrimination.
On International Women's Day, we celebrate the advancements for women workers in Jordan's garment sector and the collaborations between Better Work Jordan and the Trade Union in promoting gender equality and empowering women workers. We recognize that there is still work to be done to address the ongoing challenges faced by women workers, but we are encouraged by the progress that has been made.
We must continue to promote gender equality and empower women workers in the garment sector. By doing so, we can create a fair and equal industry where all women workers can thrive and fulfill their potential. The General Trade Union of Workers in Textile, Garment, and Clothing Industries, Better Work Jordan, and the garment factories are leading the way in promoting women's rights and empowering women workers in the garment sector. On this International Women's Day, we stand with them in their efforts to create a more just and equitable workplace for all women workers in Jordan's garment sector.
